Stone Touch will arrive on-site with a qualified stone care expert to diagnose the problem and then educate the customer. Every floor is different, and every customer is different. We will do our best to make a recommendation that is right for the customer.
Cleaning
After time, tile builds up residue and dirt that cannot be removed with a daily cleaner, and may need professional cleaning. We use scrubbing machinery and detergents that clean your floor better than you thought possible.
However, sometimes customers think their floor needs to be “cleaned”, when a “finish” is really what they’re after.
Polishing (a finish)
Polishing natural stone leaves a high gloss finish on the stone. It is a process that combines abrasion and pressure to shine the surface of the stone itself (similar to the glossy finish of a diamond). Don’t be fooled by products or companies that claim to “polish” your stone by applying a wax or acrylic to the surface of the stone. Though shiny when applied, these topical products wear away quickly, collect dirt, and cannot be removed without an expensive process (see “Stripping” below).
A polished floor has a glassy look to it, and has a brilliant reflective shine. It can be restored again and again. It is timeless, elegant look.
A polished floor can always be re-finished with a satiny honed finish to add a new look to an old floor.
Honing (a finish)
Honing natural stone leaves a smooth, satiny finish over your entire stone. Honing is a process that removes micro-scratches and etches that are in the stone due to wear. These micro-scratches and etches prevent the stone from reflecting light and result in a “dull look” on your floor. Using an abrasive process we remove a micro-layer of the surface of the stone, and at the same time fill in voids in the pores of the stone. The end result is a beautiful satiny finish.
A honed floor can always be re-finished with a high polish to add a new look to an old floor.
Sealing
The Stone Touch sealing process includes the masking of all walls, cabinets, and other surfaces before the sealer is applied.
-
Penetrating Sealers – Stone Touch applies the highest quality penetrating sealers, which are correctly applied by our team of stone experts. Penetrating sealers leave no visible trace when applied correctly. If misapplied, can leave a haze on the floor.
-
Topical Acrylic Sealers – Stone Touch uses acrylic sealers on some rough interior surfaces (such as slate and flagstone). This ensures that the stone looks beautiful, and is easy to maintain.
-
Color Enhancing Sealers – Stone Touch uses a color enhancing sealer to bring out the natural color variations of stones. It isn’t recommended on certain stone types nor on certain stone locations. Please talk to one of the natural stone experts on our team for more info.
Stripping
Unfortunately, there are many "professionals" that apply topical sealers and waxes to natural stone in order to create a shine. While this process does in fact leave a shine for a little while, it is not long before the wax begins to wear, collect dirt, and look really bad.
Stone Touch has the expertise to remove the old waxes and sealers, and refinish the stone with a beautiful polished or honed finish, followed up with a professionally applied sealer.
